Review of Free State of Jones (2016) by Andre D — 13 Aug 2016
The movie's inspirational story and accomplished acting has stayed with me for weeks...
I'm shocked that it got such lackluster reviews from so-called critics, as the story alone provides fascinating insight on the depths of the socioeconomic woes facing 'working-class' rural white southerners during the Civil War. Matt McConaughey is one such farmer, who effectively channels the angst of the multitude who were routinely stripped of their dignity, their sons, and their means to survive by the Confederate Army regularly and routinely plundering the bounty of their harvest.
The severity of their plight gives an amazingly effective perspective of how truly awful and horrific the United States' slavery system was confounding us with the question of how can people sink to depths of such depravity and allow mainstreaming of such a inhumane, barbaric culture!?!
