An incredible film. McConaughey does a fantastic job, there is some amazingly beautiful cinematography, and this story is definitely one that needed to be told. Anyone saying that this is historically inaccurate obviously hasn't done their research.
The director Gary Ross worked closely with 11 historians (including Harvard University professor of English and African (American) Studies Dr. John Stauffer,) and he studied the Civil War and Knight's story for 2 years before he even began writing the screenplay.
They even have a website you can look at to back up everything that is in the movie.
