Review of Free State of Jones (2016) by Norm D — 20 Oct 2016
A good story that deserves a better telling. "Jones" seems not to know if it's a movie or a documentary with reenactments, or maybe an interracial romance. The picture starts out as one thing and ends, 30-mins too long, as another.
What's needed is Mel Gibson & the crew from "Braveheart" or "The Patriot," or Michael Mann's direction of "The Last of the Mohicans." McConaughey is the right guy doing a good job; but he needs the aforementioned production help.
in reality the actual free state of Jones didn't have a happy ending nor endure. It morphed into the Klan and the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission and other domestic terrors concocted by vicious segregationists.
In spite of everything, take a look. It's worth it to know the story. Maybe PBS' "American Experience" will do an hour or 90-mins on this, narrated by Matthew. That would be good.
