While the average movie critic didn't like it, I think it is mostly because they didn't like the anti-racist politics and/or feel movies should be escapist fantasy. While I haven't studied the writings that inspired the movie it seems plausible from what I know about the abolition movement.
The acting was very good. The civil war is the most important revolution to happen in the US to date because it abolished slavery, was a blow against white supremacy. The abolition movement (which pre-dates the civil war) spurred the creation of the early feminist movement.
Both racism and sexism are unfinished battles. This movie is inspiring. While not perfect it is an advance for how this period is treated in film. See it. Amazon video carries it.
