Review of Free State of Jones (2016) by Dillon L — 21 Sep 2016
160630: Bleak film. Man's historical treatment of his fellow man sucks and Free State just reminds us of how sad of a species we are. People have been shitty to each other all throughout time, and people continue to be shitty to each other even now.
Oh yeah, we've improved somewhat, and there is always hope moving forward, but banks and big business profit off the backs of the working class. Government employees enslave their own people in the name of safety.
Terrorism, under the guise of religion, is running rampant. Everyone is distracted and too in debt to speak up. So what's changed? When Newton Knight decided to step up and question authority, what was the first thing he did? He took up arms.
What will you do when your government representatives are the only ones to possess them? The more we change, the more we stay the same. The nasty nature of the Civil War is on display in Free State. To my surprise, there are flash forwards, something I was not aware of.
This film eventually transitions to the 20th century and concludes there. Great costuming, make up and accessories. Really enjoyed Matthew McConaughey's pensive Newton Knight. McConaughey says more in his silence then in his lines.
Well worth watching and likely, I'll be watching it again, if not adding it to my western collection.
