Gary Ross brings an unfamiliar yet significant story of American culture to life in a fascinating history lesson but a dull movie experience. Free State Of Jones lacks the thrill of action-packed battle scenes for a drama set during the American Civil War and as hard as it aims to be a film about freedom, the "white savior" trope overshadows patriotism as McConaughay sets out to save the day.
