Review of Free Solo (2018) by Thomas M — 02 Jan 2019
Free Solo is easily one of my favorite films of the year. Directors Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi do an astonishingly remarkable job capturing one of the most mind-boggling feats of endurance in human history, Alex Honnold's free-climbing of Yosemite's El Capitan.
This documentary features phenomenal cinematography the likes of which I have never seen in a film, giving the audience an insanely intimate look into Honnold's climb. The majestic score from Marco Beltrami heightened the larger-than-life themes of the narrative as well.
Additionally, the top-notch editing from supervisor Tom Eisenhardt ensured a beautiful flow to this magnificent story.
Although I definitely carry some baggage as an endurance athlete myself, I still believe Free Solo to be one of 2018's greatest films overall, not just confined to the category of documentary.
