Review of Free Guy (2021) by Kaihaku — 12 Nov 2021
Fantastic surprise. Ryan Reynolds had fallen into the rut of fielding the Deadpool persona in pretty all of his recent films but broke free here by going for the inverse; being the one guy not in on the meta (can we still say meta or will Facebook sue?).
While the film could have gone a bit deeper with it's critiques of big video game publishers, how they devour creative properties, and abuse their developers...it still made the critique for which it deserves credit.
The acting is surprisingly solid (all around), the over the top CGI action works for once (helps that they aim for hilarity), and the plot has some nuance to it. To summarize in a sentence; the best video game movie to date that amuses with solid visual spectacle and comedy while being surprisingly smart.
