Review of Free Fire (2017) by Elliot L — 20 Apr 2017
The biggest problem I had with Free Fire is that it doesn't know what kind of movie it is. At times it tries to be a witty comedy and then sometimes it tries to be a sudpensful thriller. Neither of these work out well for the movie so it ends up just being a boring action movie.
Now for the plot. The first scene is good but the pacing is awful. The lines are witty but the they're delivered makes the jokes fall flat. If the lines were delivered one after another in an almost rapid manner, the jokes would've been a lot funnier.
Wen the "free fire" actually commences, it's interesting for about 10 minutes. It gets confusing as to who is shooting at who and who's on which side. Speaking of sides, it very difficult for the audience to root for a specific character or group because the characters are so poorly written and a lot of them are just shooting because they were shot at.
I think the writers figured out that they already drove the whole concept into the ground after 15 minutes so they try to use other things to create tension. Sadly, it doesn't work. I'm not going to get into too much detail because I'm writing this on my iPhone and I'm tired, if you wish to see this movie, I wouldn't blame you.
4/10.
