Review of Free Fire (2017) by Jenna I — 31 Jul 2017
Loved this. Ben Wheatley's most coherent film. I love low-stakes movies. LOVE THEM. Not that life and death are exactly 'low stakes' so much but it's just like, an hour and a half long story told in an hour and a half and yet the world still turns. Fuck yes.
This was excellent, there's just enough character development keep you totally engaged, the twists and the gunfire keep you jumping, and the entire thing is so absurd you can't help but get a kick out of this like god awful shootout.
It makes you realize how and why people end up caught up in supposed crimes of passion - everybody could have walked away at any moment but they were all too goddamn worried about these tiny perceived slights and their massive egos to think with, like, a modicum of logic. And of course at the end the only person who gets away is the person everybody underestimated and wrote off - typical 70s male BS used ironically. LOVE IT.
