Review of Free Fire (2017) by Chris F — 03 Jul 2017
Free Fire is a fine and enjoyable movie that has an excellent cast. I enjoyed all of the performances in the film. Some performances that stood out were Armie Hammer, Sharlto Copley, and Jack Reynor. The film is beautifully filmed by director Ben Wheatley.
There are some excellent cinematic moments from Wheatley. Unfortunately, they're just moments. The premise just runs thin quick. The movie is basically a scene extended to a feature length runtime.
It is a really interesting scene, but it's hard not to get bored at least in some moments. Also, it is hard to keep track of who is on who's side. I got confused a couple of times. The comedy mostly works, by not always.
I never laughed out loud, but I did grin at some of the one liners. Overall, I was disappointed with this film. The trailers made me really excited for this film. While I did enjoy this film and there is fun to be had, I didn't love the film as much as I wanted to.
