Review of Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991) by Tyler M — 31 Mar 2012
It's about damn time.
Okay, so it says he's dead, but this came before Freddy Vs. Jason... Are you saying this film lied to me?
The Story: It's the usual Nightmare on Elm Street flick... Freddy Krueger terrorizes a group of hapless teens... Only this time, he's searching for his long lost daughter! Quite the plot twist eh? Okay, so it's not, but just play along... It's got that sick dark sense of humor that we've all grown to love with the franchise, but it's still not really anything to write home about. As well as a dark sense of humor it's got that trademark gore that's to be expected, but that's only enough to satisfy the biggest of Freddy fans. But aside from dark humor and gore, lies the true artistry of this one of the most beloved of cult classic franchises. And that artistry is to be found in the dream sequences. While some of them are just plane stupid, some of them are genuinely entertaining. It's hit or miss, but it's what sets the Nightmare on Elm Street series above the rest of the "classic slasher" flicks.
The Cast: Robert Englund, Breckin Meyer... There's really only two names of interest here, and that's being generous. Robert Englund is Freddy Krueger, the psycho-sexual-sadistic-sandman (ha, try sayin' that five times fast)... He once again reprises his role for an eerily realistic representation of our worst nightmares... That's right, there's nothing more terrifying than a man with a hat, I know that's one of my worst nightmares... Breckin Meyer, is Spencer, the only thing more frightening than Robert Englunds performance as a man with a hat and knives on his hands is the thought that someone, even back than thought that that Breckin Meyer was a good actor... Okay, so that might be a little harsh, but did you see Garfield?... This isn't his best performance, and it's... Well it might be his worst, but I'll let you be the judge of that... Should you decide to subject yourself to this film.
One to Five Scale: 3.
It's a film for the fans, if you've never seen a Nightmare on Elm Street movie, this one isn't the one to start with... Go with the Nightmare on Elm Street, Wes Cravens: New Nightmare, or to a lesser extent Freddy Vs. Jason... This one isn't going to make you anymore of a fan, but it might just make you less accepting of men in hats.
Tyler.
