Review of Freddy Got Fingered (2001) by Benjimin H — 17 Mar 2010
Freddy got Fingered is a modern-day masterpiece. It is an absurdist, shocking, insane piece of entertainment which is at times hilarious and at times truly awful. It slips effortlessly from total farce, to being a genuine hollywood movie, to being a parody of a hollywood movie.
The bad taste transcends its fictional imagery and slips into reality: that's a real horse which he is wanking off and presumably a real dead deer which he parades around in. It is a glimpse into the mind of a madman, and the madman that only a madman coould create.
Rip Torn is excellent as the father who is probably as insane as his son, and I actually found their absurd relationship to be genuinely moving, he really does love his son as much as he hates him. Similarly Marisa Coughlan is very funny as his wheelchair-bound rocket scientist girlfriend.
The running gag of the innocent child having the crap beaten out of him is genius and the 'daddy have you got some sausages' scene is brilliant. That's not to say Freddy Got Fingered isn't bad.
.. it's terrible, but its all different levels of terrible in an entirely unique way. It is art, entertainment, postmodern and nonsensical tripe at the same time. When people originally called this a misunderstood masterpiece, I found it hard to take them seriously.
But, if you accept its awful nature as just another level of experience then I can definately see where they're coming from and i'm inclined to agree. As such, critisizing its flaws becomes menaingless and I thus nominate it 10/10.
