Review of Freaky (2020) by Nateed — 27 Jul 2021
Freaky is full of fun comedy and many gruesome kills that will make you want to look away from the screen. I really enjoyed this film and it was very entertaining. The cast really helps out with this a lot as both Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton do such a great job here.
Both capture being the opposite gender really well. Newton especially as she captures the essence of a man and a serial killer very nicely. Even the supporting cast is great with Misha Osherovich and Celeste O'Connor really knocking it out of the park as Millie's best friends.
I would say that only Dana Drori, who plays Millie's older sister, does a poor job with a lot of her line delivery falling flat. It is a good thing that the cast is does a good job because the story is a bit weak.
The first 20 minutes of the film are full of cliches and call-backs to other slasher flicks. I would even say that some of it is borderline copying with some parts of the opening scene feeling so much like Scream and small hints of Friday the 13th.
However, once the first 20 minutes pass, the film starts to earn its own identity. Yes, the story is a bit basic and doesn't have that big wow moment, but it works for this kind of film. What the film did get right was its comedy.
There were a lot of funny moments and the cast knew how to deliver their lines. Some lines didn't deliver as well as others, but it would make me smile or chuckle. Another thing the film got right was creating suspense.
There were so many moments where I was so intrigued and couldn't wait to see what happens next. The tonal changes in the film were also really well done. There would be a kill and then a joke a little bit after which made the two aspects feel very cohesive.
I was going to give this movie four stars, but sadly, the ending was just not that good. There was a certain moment in the final minutes of the film that lead to a perfect ending. I would have loved for the movie to just have stopped there.
Then there is the final scene where it sort of loses itself. Without giving spoilers, I would say that this type of scene should have come earlier in the film and in a different way. It felt so out of the blue and not well-done.
However, I had a blast watching Freaky. It had a great cast with so many funny jokes that made my viewing experience so much fun. If it wasn't for that weak ending and some slight story problems, it would have been a near-perfect slasher film.
