Review of Freaks of Nature (2015) by Grant F — 01 Nov 2015
The premise is intriguing especially with the cast it managed to wrangle. Honestly hadn't even heard of this movie until Friday the 30th because it was working under the title "Kitchen Sink" on every movie site I frequented but glad I found it as it was a fun, little, campy hour and a half. Was it ground breaking? No. Did it turn the horror-comedy genre on it's head? No. It simple allowed me to escape the real world for almost 2 hours and watch completely unrealistic things happen on screen for completely mindless entertainment purposes. Which on a Saturday Night, Halloween no less, is exactly what many people want to do. Mission Accomplished.
Now the 3 lead actors did a good job and while not Oscar worthy performances, they did entertain. The best person in the movie was Keegan-Michael Key and his speech towards the beginning was pretty funny.
If you are contemplating seeing this movie, don't let the very wordy reviews sway you (one guy even used "insipid" to describe things as if that makes his opinion matter more) as in looking after I watched the movie there are quite a few so called critics raking this over the coals and it's ridiculous. Too many critics take a movie like this and blast it for not being the next "surprise hit' or "critically acclaimed masterpiece" that should garner everyone's attention.
If looking for mindless fun, go see it. I loved every Oscar winning movie last year but I can guarantee I will watch be watching "Freaks of Nature" more times in the next 10 years than all of them combined.
