Review of Freaks (1932) by Paul V — 25 Apr 2009
Slightly mixed feelings on this. I liked the (yes, I'm going to say it) freakishness of this movie; it was scary, and yet not, but thusly more so, if you follow me, but it felt very rushed. I'm sure that's due to the half-hour that was cut from it, but that doesn't make the final product any less underwhelming.
Not that it was a letdown; it was pretty much everything I'd expected from it, and I was actually pretty impressed with the performances on the whole, given that these were circus performers, not actors.
At any rate, I think that this is a must-see movie if only for its powerful, shocking take on the whole 'true beauty is on the inside'-type message.
