Review of Freaks (1932) by Sc S — 25 Feb 2010
To quote Johnny Meah from the special features documentary who says it better than I would:
"The Film 'Freaks' would be worth watching not as a historical commentary on the way movies were made or why they're curently made in a different fashion. It would be seen as pure entertainment. We've already been case-hardened to so much shock and horror, you can no longer see it as a horrifying film. Now you're going to pay attention to the odd juxtapostion of attitudes and jealousy. You're going to see it, in short, as a story. You're going to somewhat be able to lose the deformity of the people and you're going to find that you identify with the people. In fact, you'll identify so well with the people in the film that you will start to see a lot of your current surroundings as the real freaks and not those people.".
