Review of Freaks (1932) by Kate H — 19 May 2011
One of the most controversial movies of all time. This movie effectively killed director Browning's career. Maybe it was the fact that Browning cast real sideshow performers as the "freaks".
I don't know. But this film was banned, censored, edited all to holy hell and condemned by just about everyone. Does it deserve this? No. Not at all. The "freaks" in the film are actually portrayed as a loving family unit and the "normal" people are depicted as cruel.
Sadly, the studio cut about 30 minutes of footage from the film, never to be seen again. It's a shame. The movie is very well done and it deserves to be seen by as many people as possible. Or maybe all the controversy is why we're still talking about it to this day.
Either way, if you're looking for something origional and off the beaten path, check it out. You won't be disappointed.
