Review of Freaks (1932) by Sam B — 22 Dec 2011
This is a time when a star rating can't really reflect how I feel about it. This is a film that is unlike any I've ever seen made by Hollywood, in the 30's and now. I don't know if I would call this a horror film, it seems to fit much more comfortably in the realm of films by Lynch and Herzog (who came forty years later).
Its amazing to me how much more visually stylish this is than Browning's Dracula from the year before. He basically broke into Hollywood and then made an insane movie that would keep him back at the gates forever.
The interesting quality of this movie has a lot to do with the people in it who are "freaks" but even more so its because they're nonprofessional actors. They're given a lot of melodramatic things to say and it is insane to see them do it.
Its like someone took a movie from the 30's and replaced all of the actors with deformed people. This is a very interesting movie that I won't forget about any time soon.
