Review of Freaks (1932) by Ryan V — 15 Mar 2012
Tod Browning is best known for directing Dracula, but I'd say his finest film is this unsettling yet heartfelt parable about sideshow freaks. The plot involves a cruel acrobat (Olga Baclanova) who hoodwinks her way into marriage with wealthy circus midget (Harry Earles).
She plans on killing her new husband and running away with his money, but the protective extended "family" of the freak show rushes in to make her pay. Filmed with actual sideshow performers, Freaks is a very unique entry in the roster of 1930's horror movies.
It's also one of the best.
