Review of Freaks (1932) by Leanbh C — 01 Feb 2008
Tod Browning casted real deformed people in this (im)moral, horror tale: conjoined twins, hermaphrodite, dwarves, amputees, syndrome-afflicts, microcephalies. To think this was an early 30s film, Browning must have big balls to create such a controversial piece.
Freaks is one psychological ride, critiquing man's ethical deformity behind alluring facade. Moreover, the vengefulness at the (original, not alternate) epilogue unabashedly depicts humane reactions to such trauma--the freaks live inside all of us, through greed, revenge--ourselves.
