Review of Freaks (1932) by Calyre Z — 29 Sep 2011
Browning's infamous Dracula follow-up (in the horror genre) is a remarkable feat of film-making, with the director using real circus sideshow performers to paint a grotesque, celluloid Grand Guignol.
While some dialogue is difficult to understand (in particular Harry and Daisy Earles) there is no mistaking the nightmarish "freaks" crawling in the mud and rain, looking to exact their revenge for a heinous crime.
Haunting. There will never again be a film like Freaks, a misunderstood rare gem that stands highly underrated for the classic it truly is.
