Review of Frantic (1988) by Marcus H — 27 Oct 2007
Roman Polanski's homage to Hitchcock could just as easily been directed by Claude Chabrol - this is simply the sort of taut thriller you just dont get these days.
What starts off as a good example of a bureaucrat's linguistic ignorance coming back to bite, quickly becomes something far more deft and entertaining. Arab spies, nuclear devices and a kidnapping - what more could you really want in 2 hours of cinematic entertainment.
But there's more going on. For the aesthete Polanski delivers the goods with gusto, with stunning use of depth and subtly deviding the frame vertically there's barely a single shot that doesn't portray the cinematographer's photographic prowess.
The fashion may be dated, but the fun and intrigue are timeless. An overlooked one to catch if you can.
