Review of Frantic (1988) by John E — 18 Apr 2011
Frantic is an extremely unremarkable movie, so unremarkable that I am having difficulty finding praise or blame. Harrison Ford seemed to be doing what he does much better in The Fugitive, but it was nice to see him a little more destabilized and unsure of what to do than normal.
Polanski fails here to provide captivating, assured direction, as I know he is capable of doing. The terrorist plot felt quite recycled and tacked on, the "underworld" scenes weren't risque in the slightest, and the movie doesn't feel very "Frantic" at all.
It is in fact quite slow. There are a few interesting scenes, but by and large it's one of many garden-variety thrillers.
