Review of Frankie and Johnny (1991) by William O — 11 Jun 2004
This movie is a forgotten gem in the romantic comedy world. We've been so blinded by Julia Roberts, Kate Hudson and their ilk that movies such as this provide classic lines but disappear in our memories.
The story of an ex-con chef charming a waitress into love that they both crave is well orchestreated by Al Pacino (who throws in the odd "hoo-ha") and Michelle Pffeifer (who is attempted to look homely in this...but she is too gorgeous). Yes, our lovely "Scarface" couple returning in new roles.
The supporting cast is littered with scene-stealers, most succesful of which is Nathan Lane as the gay neighbour. He has every single one of the best lines..but it followed closely by Michelle's waitress coworkers. One a perputual loner with a taste for bran and cynical views, another a sassy new york broad that has a tendensy to wear gold pumps during intercourse. "Who do I have to fuck to get a waffle?"...that's her classic line.
This movie does pile on the bad emotions towards the end. The histories of our heroes catch up and leave the audience not feeling that swell (especially after the immense charm early in the movie by the whole cast).
Another piece of fun that is certainly not fluff (alot of New York language sneaks in) that is not a feel good movie, but still a good movie.
