Review of Frankie and Johnny (1991) by Jake H — 20 May 2009
Frankie and Johnny may not be the most original romance movie in the world, boy meets girl against a beautiful new York back drop? yeah. but even if you think you have seen it all before this superb film sure dose what you want.
..and more. I could tell from the opening song that I was going to love it. it's a throw-back to the likes of the billy wilder and Blake Edward's movies of the 50's and 60's. whilst embracing the 80's/90's way of modern relationships and romance.
it carries come wonderful intermit moments and really well written dialogue, not to mentions some genuinely funny moments. Al Pacino takes on a role that you don't usually see him in. he plays it with honesty, and what could easily be mistaken by the viewer as an unattractive "stalkerish'" persistence, becomes part of his likable charm and ultimately leads too his characters wonderful senserity.
Pfeiffer also dose a magnificent job of playing a grumpy and damaged young woman, whilst maintaing the audiences sympathy. the story is traditional and relatable. the entire movie is shot with a golden tint, which gives it an almost rustic and soothing feel.
the stand out scene for me has to be where Frankie has doubts for a relationship and johnny is about to leave. she has a change of heart and both decide to sit on the balcony of Frankies apartment and watch the sun come up listening to Claude Debussy "Clair de lune".
its absolute bliss. romance in celluloid form. Frankie and johnny is hidden, forgotten and underrated gem. Seek it out.
