Reminiscent of Burton's early work in that it seems to be influenced by the works that inspired him to become a filmmaker, and not by his own work. There's a sense in his later works that he is only copying himself.

Here, the atmosphere may be familiar, but he's drawing on more personal and all together more touching and genuine themes and ideas.
