Review of Frankenweenie (2012) by Paul J — 10 Feb 2013
The perfect animated film for gothic children everywhere. It's Burton's childhood brought to life. The stop motion is perfection and the characters are all so memorable. Even the smallest bit parts have priceless moments (the school kids all have hysterical scenes).
It gets gruesomely dark at times and the third act could even be considered horror. The filmmakers are having so much fun paying homage to Frankenstein. My only complaint comes near the end. The tacked on happy ending doesn't suit the theme.
I was hoping they'd pay off the playback line, "I can fix that." Sometimes, kids can't fix everything. It would have been better if the poodle had pups. Still, it's such an innovative, daring and original animated film.
Edgar is hilarious and Landau as Rzykruski steals every scene he's in. Then there's the cat - brilliant! This is one of Tim Burton's best.
