Review of Frankenweenie (2012) by Darren P — 14 Feb 2013
It was pretty cute, but I was as enthralled with it as I was with ParaNorman or Wreck It Ralph. I think that first of all, the ending should have been different. Yes, they gave it a nice happy ending..but I think it would have been a better message for the kids to teach them unfortunately pets (and people) die and that there is nothing you can do to stop it because it's a natural part of life. Also, I was tad offended by the asian character they had. I realize that it was actually an asian actor playing him, but the accent sounded fake and made me think of Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's while watching. Who knows, maybe that is what he sounds like, but I found it distracting cause it sounded like a bad accent to me. Winona Ryder didn't really impress me either. She seemed to be doing her usual Winona Ryder plays someone dark shtick like we've all seen before. Also, there were some elements of the score that reminded me of Edward Scissorhands. I guess that is expected when Tim Burton and Danny Elfman have been working together for years.
Overall, I did enjoy myself and I even found myself tearing up when Sparky initially dies (I know what that is like), but I thought it could have been better.
