Review of Frankenweenie (2012) by Byron B — 16 Mar 2013
This came out the same year as ParaNorman, which I thought was the better movie. I have not seen Burton's short on which this was based. References to Universal and Hammer monster films are dropped left and right.
It got to be a bit too much without enough originality. I enjoyed the opening where Victor shows his parents his homemade horror film made with model miniatures and his dog Sparky. The kids' new science teacher, while voiced by Martin Landau, looks a lot like Vincent Price.
The message in favor of science education gets jumbled when the teacher is forced to leave. The scene near the end where several of the kids try to copy Victor's "science experiment" was fun.
The chaos this leads to only prolongs the wait until we see WereBat Cat vs. Frankenweenie. Overall, it seemed like the visual aspects won out over the development of the voice work.
