Review of Frankenweenie (2012) by Samantha H — 09 Mar 2015
This might be my favourite Tim Burton film. Right up there with Coraline and Paranorman as an animated family film that draws on horror tropes. This has references to the genre in virtually every scene, from character names and appearance to settings, quick visual gags and clever lines.
The first 2/3 of the film is definitely family-friendly, focusing on the relationship between Victor and Sparky, which is properly touching with lovely flashes of humour and warmth. There's more than a few similarities to Edward Scissorhands (like, almost all of it), but that's a good thing...
The final act lurches more overtly into horror as the experiments start misfiring, and there are some genuinely scary moments, but by this stage the film has earned them. I really enjoyed this.
