Review of Frankenweenie (2012) by Ken S — 13 Jan 2015
I've been a Tim Burton fan for years, but in recent years I've grown a little worn out by his repetitive tendencies. He had stopped creating original films in his unique style, but taking some classic story and making a Tim Burton version of it, casting Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, and the films didn't have the same spark he once had.
That isn't to say I didn't like these films, in fact only a few I can say I truly disliked ("Alice in Wonderland" comes to mind). There is something really great about "Frankenweenie".
Not only is it an original Burton film...sure its a remake but at least he made the original, but it also doesn't have Depp or Carter in any role and feels like a Burton feature during his prime. I enjoy classic monster movies, and this has references galore.
Doesn't matter if you love Universal Monsters or Hammer Horror, Godzilla or Gremlins...there is something for all monster movie fans, and the film had an emotional core that held it all together. It would be great if Burton returned to making movies with original premises and left his days of adaptations, remakes, and reimaginings behind him.
