Review of Frank (2014) by St. A — 18 May 2014
I'm a bit torn on this one. Even though I knew it isn't a conventional biopic, this isn't what I expected. The film is slightly surreal but grounded in a reality that is both modern and satirical (or cynical, even?) The problem is the film took a while to get going.
Before then, it meanders, admittedly amusingly but you do wonder where it is heading. When they finally got a place to go (a big gig @ SXSW via various modern social media) the film kicks into a higher gear and the narrative comes into focus.
So it is a film of 2 halves - the latter more interesting than the former but overall, I find the film charming and I like the bittersweet ending. This isn't to everyone's taste but if you want something different, I would recommend sampling this with an open mind but manage your expectations.
(While I'm no Sidebottom fan, I find the "inspired by" a bit head-scratching. Is it just the presence of the head or is the music from his repertoire too? Or is it simply in the spirit of? The mind boggles.
