Review of Frank (2014) by Ellis W — 13 May 2015
Frank feels slightly jumbled in the many themes it attempts to blend. Granted there are some wonderful quirky moments which are pitch perfect, but in between these high notes it feels a bit confused. The presence of a suicide theme, drugs and psychological well being need a tender slight of hand to be able to weave it into a successful comedy, and the film rarely manages to pull it off.
We do have a very strong physical performance from Michael Fassbender and twisted support from Maggie Gyllenhaal, but on the whole, the trailers and promotion of the film mislead the audience into thinking this will be a warm and charming drama, which it sadly isn't.
