Review of Frances Ha (2013) by Zack B — 09 Jan 2014
There's a freshness here that seems unparalleled, but of course, Baumbach's film would not exist without the love for outsiders and youth inherent in Francois Truffaut's films. Like Truffaut, Baumbach is deeply affectionate towards his main character and he's not afraid to follow her everywhere, whether it be at an awkward dinner with lose connections or at parties where drinking seems unable to serve any kind of solace or ease of communication.
I adored the film for this unapologetic structure as well as for the endearing black and white cinematography and, of course, Greta Gerwig's deeply felt performance that feels more at home than most acting performances.
