Review of Frances Ha (2013) by Roy B — 11 Nov 2013
I usually try to stay away from new Indie/Alt movies because of terrible past experiences but Frances Ha may have single handedly changed my mind. Easily one of the best movies of 2013 for me. I was hesitant about the use of black & white film and even more hesitant about Noah Baumbach who I was not a fan of, but everything in this movie just works and I'm gonna give most of the credit to Greta Gerwig.
I think her collaboration and performance brought out the best in Baumbach's talents which I can appreciate now. I watched this movie twice in two days and would have watched it a third time if my theater kept playing it.
Shout out to the soundtrack which I've been listening to for weeks that contains music from artists David Bowie to Bach. There's also a clear Woody Allen and French New Wave influence in Frances Ha.
All these diverse musical and filmic elements gel perfectly to make a fantastic movie.
