Review of Frances Ha (2013) by Casey B — 02 Nov 2013
Frances Ha is everything Lena Dunham wants to say but grew up too privileged to understand (and I'm a fan of both Girls and Tiny Furniture).
It blows my mind that in 1995 Baumbach made a film (Kicking and Screaming) that defined Generation X and now, 20+ years later he's proved to be the voice of my generation. "Or at least, a[nother] generation".
Frances Ha defines bittersweet (&) poignancy. It will make you laugh, it will make you ache. It is proof that Noah Baumbach is the most underrated filmmaker on the planet. The list things I would do to be the editor on one of his films begins with something vulgar and ends with something vile.
If I were to forget that Kevin Smith exists, Richard Linklater and Noah Boambach would be the two filmmakers that have had the biggest influence on me as a writer. It's awesome to see them both put out (arguably) the best film's of their careers in the same year.
This is my favorite film of 2013. It might be my favorite film of the past 5 years. I don't care if you don't like black and white. Watch this film.
