Review of Frances Ha (2013) by Kate B — 13 Jan 2014
Never really a fan of black-&-white movies, but director Noah Baumbach's "Frances Ha" looked crisply fine and gleefully organic. As if a modernized Annie Hall, lead character Frances (created and played by the winning Greta Gerwig) was quirky and almost childlike; meeting people to converse with or even going places to belong in.
The fast dialogues, if not reading between the lines, would sound non-important while the film could easily be dismissed as a piece of nothingness. Yet in contrast with the colourless palette, its screenplay might have distinctively identified one common trait of some late-20-something New Yorkers: their continuing to seek a fit-in past prime and beyond comfort zone.
