Review of Frailty (2012) by Curt L — 28 Dec 2009
This is another film that took it old school, strayed away from the other movies that were popular around this time and wasn't well-received by critics. It's best you don't read up a lot on this movie as I got a whole lot more from it by not having any idea of what it was about.
The characters are all established as normal, every day people and when the ball drops, it's much more hard hitting than one would expect. Matthew McConaughey keeps it subtle and dark and worked wonders on the role.
He was excellent. Bill Paxton plays a normal dude who may or may not have lost his marbles. Not knowing either way 100% says that he was flawless to me. Powers Boothe gives a good performance in his smaller role.
Matt O'Leary and Jeremy Sumpter were both incredible as the two boys. They came off as very natural and I loved them both (did I just say that about child actors?). Paxton is as money behind the camera as he is in front.
He had atmosphere in every frame, gave some wicked shots and transitions and the suspense nearly made me constipated. The movie is twisted in the sense that almost has the same philosophy as "Dexter.
" The man is killing human beings but he actually thinks he's doing the work of the Lord! The more thought put into it, the more twisted it gets. The movie also has very little violence and relies on the audience warming up to the characters for the action to be hard hitting.
It was a very brave and successful move, in my opinion. All in all, this is one of my favorite movies of the last decade. It pushed some boundaries, left me scratching my head in deep thinking while also pummeling me with its story.
Bill Paxton is now one of the greatest people ever. See this movie.
