Review of Fracture (2007) by Daniel K — 08 Oct 2009
3: Quality genre picture. The stellar cast is absolutely what makes it work. Embeth Davitz and Rosamund Pike are two of my favorite contemporary actresses that I wish worked much more. They are both perfect in this.
Davitz has a fairly limited role, but what she does do is significant. Pike is absolutely biting, conflicted, and beautiful. Hopkins shows yet another side of Lecter-like psyche and in some ways it is more sinister and disturbing than Lecter.
It was hilarious though. I couldnâ??t help but cackle with glee on numerous occasions at his demonic tendencies. Gosling is excellent as always. I honestly canâ??t recall a bad performance from him.
The rest of the supporting cast is quite good as well. There is nothing truly exceptional about the film or the story, but it is told in an entertaining enough manner to keep one engaged throughout. I sincerely doubt it will stay as compelling through multiple viewings though.
I suspect this is the kind of picture that is best the first time around. I suppose the right kind of viewer could predict where the picture is going, but I was more than happy to be led around by the story and the characters.
The ending they went with is definitely superior to the two endings they used for the first and second preview screenings. Quite effective.
