Some films have slow building tension. It can be used effectively to create a suspenseful atmosphere. Foxcatcher has slow building tension, only because the film drags along, doing what it can to bleed each scene dry of its tension and suspense.

Foxcatcher tells the true story of the Schultz brothers as they come into contact with John du Pont for the first time. The film boasts three exceptional performances, with Channing Tatum and Steve Carell giving the most notable performances, with Tatum giving the best of his career.

Everyone else around these three hold their own and do a good job, but the film they are in tries too hard. It crawls along because it hits you over the head that these are broken people who are twisted.

It never lets up and it becomes tedious to sit through all the way to the very end. By the time the film does end, the viewer is left with three exceptional performances in a film that isn't quite sure what subtlety is.
