Review of Foxcatcher (2014) by Cole E — 03 Mar 2015
Foxcatcher is a story of elements, of human fundamentals. And In its two hour running time, the film eagerly wants you to discover what is missing, what is lacking in the relationship between each character. And more importantly, it challenges you to find and identify what fills that privation, and discern what was beneficial and detrimental. Carell brilliantly plays a man who's motives, background, and ideas are shrouded in misunderstanding and pity, while Tatum and Ruffalo carry the wonderful burden of being under the Du Pont enigma.
Foxcatcher is a black mirror that shows the inner workings of our own misunderstanding, drowning in our zeal for something more than power, showing what we as human beings are capable of in the smallest of transgressions. And in its dark, brooding, and near-nihilistic attitude towards its subject matter, it works.
