Review of Foxcatcher (2014) by Jonathan K — 18 Mar 2015
A sensational American crime in 1996, eccentric dynasty heir and sports enthusiast John Du Pont shot and killed Dave Schultz, coach of the Olympic wrestling team he exclusively sponsored. Featuring career-best performances from Channing Tatum, Mark Ruffalo and an unrecognizable Steve Carell, "Foxcatcher" tells in a deliberately crawling pace of a tragedy about sibling rivalry, hollow idolatry and desertion.
Shading the complex relationships between Du Pont and the Schultz brothers/wrestlers, director Bennett Miller intended an isolated and joyless build-up that was extremely uncomfortable to sit through.
By the time the cold-blooded murder chillingly acted out, this true dramatic story offered no palatable explanation as the mystery senselessly and still deeply fascinates.
