Review of Foxcatcher (2014) by Matt P — 27 Jun 2015
It isn't that Foxcatcher isn't a decent film, it's just that it seems to be missing some critical elements. Carell and Ruffalo are excellent, although the fake nose often seems too obvious and the impact on Carell's line delivery was apparent.
Tatum is acceptable but once again does nothing to prove he is anything better than an unintelligent brute whose best scenes happen when he isn't talking. And overall, the timing of the movie just feels off.
It feels much longer than its 2 hour run length and some scenes just seem unnecessary or repetitive, especially when the film finally concludes. Tatum's acting does seem to block what is obviously a fascinating psychological study between him and Du Pont, although the implications are still there.
Ultimately, the film isn't a complete loss and still serves as a fascinating and partly true story, even if the director lingers far too long on the wrong actor.
