Review of Foxcatcher (2014) by Horace J — 25 Jul 2015
Steve Carell can act.
I can no longer look at him as just a comedian. This guy is scary as hell in this film. Plain and simple: he's a nutjob. Carell plays John du Pont; heir of the du Pont family dynasty. Yes, that Dupont company...
He plays a wannabe coach who really is nothing more than the world's biggest phony. He's also mentally ill and has very little friends or close associates. He's surrounded by lackeys and yes men. But b/c of his wealth, that gives him enormous power and influence.
Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo play brothers Mark and Dave Schultz. They were both Olympic Gold Medal winners at the Summer Games of 1984. It's their relationship and their relationship to Steve Carell's character that drive this film. I'm not gon' say anything more, other than that in some areas it is light on dialog and it is very, VERY eerie.
Still it's a really good psychological drama and it is a very good film...
#DaveSchultz.
