Review of Foxcatcher (2014) by Dcedmonds — 29 Jan 2015
"Foxcatcher" 10 Scale Rating: 7.0 (Good) ...
The Good: Steve Carell is almost unrecognizable as Jon du Pont, a millionaire obsessed with wrestling. Hands down one of the best performances of the year. Once upon a time I thought that Channing Tatum was a stiff and poor actor, but he's come a long way and was also exceptional here. Tatum plays troubled wrestler Mark Schultz, while Mark Ruffalo portrays his brother Dave to round out a trio of amazing performances. The characterization is extremely well done and once the film finally gets going (more on that later), it becomes a fascinating story.
The Bad: The problem is that it takes way WAY too long to get going. With a 2:10 run time, "Foxcatcher" doesn't fully grab you until the film's final couple of acts. Before that, it's extremely slow and I had a hard time staying interested. They probably could have cut out a good 30 minutes and it would have vastly improved the film. A good movie, but not one of the best of the year and somewhat overrated with all of it's Best Picture nods.
