Review of Foxcatcher (2014) by Connor D — 03 Mar 2015
I have been hearing about "Foxcatcher" for a while now, but it wasn't showing in any of the theaters around me, so I had to wait for the blu ray release, and after watching it, I think that was a good thing. The true story tells about an Olympic Gold Medalist (Tatum) who meets a rich man (Carell), who both end up forming a wrestling team, which gives Tatum's character, Mark Schultz, the opportunity to make a name for himself instead of being overshadowed by his brother, David (Ruffalo).
Now, I will say that I by no means hated or despised this film. I think the directing and acting was top notch, and deserved the Oscar recognition that it got for those categories. However, despite the great direction and acting, this film seemed to drag and was dull for a great majority of its 130 minute run time. I really didn't feel that invested or involved with any of the characters in this film. Another big problem is that, even if you were a big fan of this film, this movie is not replayable at all. There is no way I could see myself ever watching this movie again. But, even though I do have many problems with film, I respect the acting, directing, and the goal that this film was trying to achieve, so I can not butcher this grade completely. "Foxcatcher" definitely isn't going to be a timeless classic that will be remembered forever, and it isn't as great as it could have been, but this movie could be good for the right person on the right day. 5.5/10.
