Review of Foxcatcher (2014) by Isaac B — 31 May 2015
What an odd flick. If this was not based on a true story, and someone just decided to write this story and have it end the way this film ends, I would not like it one bit. This isn't your average movie where when the credits roll, the lives of the main characters are changed for the better, everyone has learned a lesson, and a brighter future follows.
No, this movie is the opposite. It seems life was not so bad before the events take place and then once they do, our main character played by Channing Tatum declines into a very unlikable character. Certain scenes that take place had me asking why this had to happen.
This is a ridiculous true story. All the characters in it are socially awkward, quiet, and strange to watch for an elongated period of time. That is sort of how the film feels as well. The shots are very slow and linger for a while making each scene feel more real however, at the same time uncomfortable.
Without spending too much time on this one, I'll say, this is still a fascinating story and told well according to the content. Steve Carell's character is one of the strangest weirdos I've ever seen on screen and yet so is Tatum's just to a much lesser degree.
Mark Ruffalo and his family are the only somewhat normal people in the film but they are in it the least. Besides all that, the cinematography is beautiful making it a pleasant film to watch, even if it wasn't a pleasant film to watch.
I will say watch it though, it's unique, it's true, it's intriguing, but don't expect a fun popcorn flick at the movies.
