Review of Foxcatcher (2014) by Antonia H — 29 Jun 2015
Poorly written and inaccurate but well acted "biography" of an US Olympic wrestler being recruited by a deranged wrestling coach (Carrell). Steve Carell commences his "dark and serious" phase of his comic career (as did Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Sandler, and all other comedians) as he plays John Du Pont heir (chemical company).
John became a patron of wrestling as be built a training facility and recruited an elite squad of olympic wrestlers. The movie takes great detail of the former majesty of the Dupont estate, including the interiors such as the trophy room, the training gym.
But what the film doesn't catch is the instability of Dupont who once claimed he was Jesus, the Dali Lama, and a Russian Tsar. The months leading up to the murder of David Shultz, Dupont's sanity deteroriated.
The movie doesn't take this into account. Dupont believed that Schultz was part of a international conspiracy to murder him.
