Review of Foxcatcher (2014) by Jeff L — 23 Aug 2015

Just finished this.

So, the main take away from all of this is that it shed light on something I didn't know about. I had to go and look up all the facts, but I never would have if it weren't for watching this dramatized version of the actual events.

All the acting in it is fantastic. You have accolades all around for the cast. Steve Carell was great, and creepy. Channing Tatum was emotional and confused. And Ruffalo was just a great supporting nice guy. Makes me just want to go watch a bunch of Mark Ruffalo movies.

As far as the movie itself I felt it ran a bit long. I think that it could have shaved about 30 minutes just because some of the scenes, although emotional, could have gone a bit shorter. I'm not sure of the intent behind the movie when it make me feel awkward about certain circumstances, but it definitely did.

In light of all that, it did make me want to know more about the story. I looked up some of the box office results and I see a $25,000,000 production budget only making $12,000,000. That intrigues me a bit because I know that people call out for more original movies all the time. This was a very original movie.

Although I give it an above average score, I give that score primarily to the actors and the direction. The editing could have been much better. Visually it was gorgeous to look at. I thought the cinematography was great. I also thought all the prosthesis that the actors wore looked fantastic.

Primarily I would recommend this to people that don't know about this part of American history. I know I didn't. I would also recommend it to people who are naysayers against Channing Tatum's acting abilities over the years. He has gotten better and better. Steve Carell has also gotten better and better. The man was nominated for an Oscar for this role. Although he didn't win, he definitely deserved it.
